Есть такое понятие – пропавшие без вести. Вот сегодня я хочу немного рассказать вам о группе The Animals – пропавшую без вести, при этом одну из величайших британских групп 1960-х годов.

The Animals – одна из самых выдающихся групп Золотого Века. Существовали они в своем первоначальном составе совсе недолго – с 1964 по 1966 годы, записали четыре альбома и шесть синглов, но след оставили – как падающая звезда первой величины. Их певец Эрик Бердон пел блюз так, как никто другой из белых – без вежливости, без закавык, по-коренному. За это уважению к ним не было предела.

А петь Эрику именно так было отчего – о бедной жизни он знал не понаслышке: он вырос в суровом шахтерском городе Ньюкасле и, как у Максима Горького, улица была его университетом.

Эрик говорит: "Мы должны были быть первыми панками, мы были агрессивны, но должны были быть еще агрессивнее. Мне кажется, люди вокруг тогда просто не понимали, что именно значило название группы. The Animals are one of the most prominent bands of the Golden Age. They existed in their original composition for a short time - from 1964 to 1966, recorded four albums and six singles, but left a trace - like a shooting star of the first magnitude. Their singer Eric Burdon sang the blues like no other white man - without politeness, without quibbles, in a radical way. For this respect for them knew no bounds.

Like attracts like; soon in his hometown there was a company of people who shared Eric's feelings and dreamed of playing his favorite black music. They formed a group and named it The Animals.
Eric says: "We were supposed to be the first punks, we were aggressive, but we had to be even more aggressive. It seems to me that people around then simply did not understand what exactly the name of the group meant. Only the French understood us: we understand, they said, speech it's about animal instinct: to kill when hungry. "
And they were actually wild. Guitarist Hilton Valentine recalls: “I played guitar, fell on my back, rolled with her on stage, fucked her - who else did anything like this in 1964? We were all from poor working-class neighborhoods and were ready to do anything to break out out of this poverty. And they were able to do it. "
Their version of the old American prison ballad "House of the Rising Sun" proved to be the first swallow of folk rock. Young Bob Dylan, who just recorded the song on his first album (where they got it from), recalls being knocked down by the Animals version.
The song immediately became number one on both sides of the Atlantic.

Along with the Beatles and the Stones - The Animals were at the head of the so-called "British Invasion" - the import of English bands into the United States, starved for irregularity and politically incorrectness.
What made it all fascinating was the fact that the British tended to pray for black American music, from the blues to Tamla Motown, and America was to them the Promised Land - and a gold well, too.
