One night, my mother heard some noise outside. cs she got up to switch on the light, she saw a shadow on the glass window. She thought it was a thief, but then she heard a knock on the door. When she slowly walked to the door, she heard a peculiar grunting and thumping. She stopped, took a deep breath and watched keenly as the shadow of the figure appeared again on the window. By now, she was sure that it was the hyena, rumoured to be on the prowl.
Our house was one among the five houses in a row, which shared a common wall. Everyone in the locality was aware of the danger. cs telephone services were not available in those days, people alerted each other by thumping on the walls.
Everyone was awake, alert and making loud noises to frighten the hyena away. Even amid the commotion, the hyena moved to a 70-year-old person's house and tried to break open his door.
The poor man put all his boxes against the door and shouted for help. Maybe his loud cries for help confused the hyena, for it ran away. People felt relieved. cnd peace returned to the locality.
