Визуально и акустически «Arktis.» отличается от своих предшественников. Вводные опусы «Disassembled», «Mass Darkness» и «My Heart Is of the North» призваны продемонстрировать эту перемену с помощью мощных риффов, толстого баса и гитарного тона, скорее напоминающего фузз, нежели овердрайв. After a legendary career in one of the leading black metal teams of all time, he released five full-length solo albums, and almost each of them was warmly received by critics, but not everything is so rosy. If “Adversary” (2006) really intrigued with its structures, the record “angL” (2008) became the real peak of Ishan’s post-EMPEROR career. However, after “After” (2010), solo discography began to be disastrously lost in the vocalist’s overall background. Everything that distinguished his early material - riffs, riffs and even more riffs, as well as smooth compositions (and riffs again) - began to be replaced by more and more abstract elements, and when the signature songs in the Scarab style were replaced by numbers a la M ”, the fun is over. "Arktis." marks a new chapter in Ishan's solo journey, which finally got rid of nihilism.
Visually and acoustically “Arktis.” different from its predecessors. Introductory opuses Disassembled, Mass Darkness, and My Heart Is of the North are designed to showcase this change with powerful riffs, thick bass, and a guitar tone that resembles fuzz rather than overdrive. The latter demonstrates Hammond's organ, which provides lasting nostalgia for the progressive rock of the 70s and deep shredding with a classic feel.
But despite the riffs and in some places thrash overtones, “Arktis.” It will be remembered for its progressive character, which resembles the departure of the Norwegian scene from black at the turn of the millennium. So, the numbers “South Winds” and “Frail” flare up with electronics, referring to MORTIIS and even further, in the 80s, and “Crooked Red Line”, diluted with sharp saxophone parts, is more likely associated with the early works of ULVER despite the magnificent guest appearance of the soloist SHINING by Jorgen Mankeby, who provides the track with the necessary dark emotions. Crisp, warm and greasy production only emphasizes the progressive nature of Arktis. and is perceived as another echo from the 80s.
And although these references look organically, the album works best in moments of fragility and melancholy. “My Heart Is of the North,” for example, contains a “clear” lull between portions of crushing shredding, which will end up in organ parts and turn the song into one of the best on the disc.
Einar Solberg of LEPROUS appears in Disassembled and Celestial Violence and provides brilliant contrasts to Ishan's black vocals. The same softness is again manifested with the moving acoustics of “Frail”, however, the peak is “In the Vaults” with soulful vocal melodies and lyrics. Reflections on the long Norwegian winter at these moments seem the most authentic.
"Arktis." filled with interesting songs that fluctuate between gloom and a dichotomy, however, something interesting is constantly happening in the speakers.
True to its form, the album becomes an indivisible experience with an ideal duration of 48 minutes and the perfect conclusion to Celestial Violence, a song that lowers the curtain with solemnity and drama. The latest incarnation of Ishanov’s sound appeals to dozens of influences and turns them into something dynamic and attractive, and multiple emotions only complement artistic authenticity as part of the concept of northern travel: dangerous expeditions to distant, extreme and very diverse lands.
