A Lover Like YouYou came a ragin'
At my front door
You said, "Hey, I never see you no more."
You broke a window
And you climbed on through
I could never be friends with a lover like you
You kissed the chef
He quit the band
Arkansas BluesWell I hide behind my guitar like a sparrow in the night
Hopin’ I might fly away anew
Cause they’ll love you when you’re wrong
And then leave you when you’re right
Tell me baby, what’s a boy to do?
Well I came to town a stranger, not knowin’ how to act
Figured I’d hang out and just get found.
Barroom LamentMy first hangout when I moved to Galveston was the Old Quarter Cafe. It's the best bar ever, except they don't have liquor, food, or customers. So, in between sets I went across the street to drink whiskey, eat peanuts, and stare at the cigarette machine.
I'm tired of drinkin' whiskey by myself
I'm tired of drinkin' whiskey by myself
I wish you'd take that bottle
And put it right back on the shelf
Cause I'm tired of drinkin' whiskey by myself
ChickensChickens
written by Ray Wyllie Hubbard & Hayes Carll
I got chickens in my front yard, what they do is scratch and peck
I got chickens in my front yard, what they do is scratch and peck
Come supper time I'll go out there gonna find me one and wring its neck.
Don't Let Me FallI walked the highway since I can't remember
I cut my poor family right down to the bone
From the shadows of hell to the winds of December
They dined with the stranger, woke up all alone
[Chorus]
So don't let me fall, 'cause I might not get up again
Just hold me tight, right now what I need's a friend
Down the Road TonightThrifts store cowboys
Five and dime junkies
Red dirt plow boys
Asphalt monkeys
Holly rollers
Signal callers
Truck stop angels
Backstreet brawlers
Good FriendsWe used to run around skippin' school and drinkin' beer
One drink and the good lord would get us out of here
But now those days are gone, and everything has changed
It's all been turned around, everybody's rearranged
Hey, hey, where did all my good friends go
Maybe someplace far away
Where did all my good friends go
Hey Baby Where You BeenWELL THEY TOOK ALL MY CLOTHES AND THEY TOOK ALL MY MONEY
TOLD ME DIRTY JOKES, NOT A DAMN ONE FUNNY
BEEN ALRIGHT IF THEY'D OF SEEN MY HONEY
HEY BABY WHERE YOU BEEN
WELL I WEAR BIG BRITCHES AND I WALK REAL TALL
I'M EATIN' SWEET POTATOES, IF I'M EATIN' MUCH AT ALL
WAKE UP IN THE MORNIN' JUST A TALKIN' TO THE WALL
Hide MeAfter all these years of running 'round
Of flying high and fallin' down
Well, the time has come at last
To rest my heart and ease my past
I'm gonna leave these blues behind
For some other fool to find
He don't care and I won't mind
Hide me babe, hide me babe
Knockin' Over WhiskeysI keep knockin over whiskeys
no ones laughin at my jokes
they got me spinnin round in circles
like a tin can in the spokes
when i left town this mornin
with a smile upon my face
ahh babe i swear i never knew
Live Free Or DieWell, I'm doin' ten to twenty
In the frozen granite state
And every day I go to work
To stamp out license plates
Everyday I got to work
And every night I cry
'Cause every license plate I make
Naked CheckersYou told your mama, you told your pa
Mama called the preacher, Daddy called the law
But it's alright, it's alright, we did not need them anyway
We just won't come home on Christmas
Or any other holiday
You say behave yourself, I say I'll try
You say don't go out tonight and I say why
Perfect LoverI could be the perfect lover if you let me
I could be the only thing you've ever known
I could scream out all your lonely heart's desires
I could hold all your life's pain inside my own
I could bring the clouds for you to walk among them
I could raise the seas for them to know your grace
I could teach the Gods of all your Autumn's glory
Richey LeeRichey Lee was his Father's boy
Big, loud, Hard-drinkin' bundle of Joy
A walkin' laugh wrapped up in corduroy
Richey couldn't do no wrong
Grew up with a fast runnin' crowd
Good bunch of boys, just a little too loud
Can't fault a man for being proud
She Left Me For Jesuswe''ve been datin since high school we never once left this town
we use to go out on the weekends and we'd drink til we drowned
but now she's acting funny and i don't understand
i think that she's found her some other man
chorus:
she left me for jesus and that just ain't fair
The Love That We Need
You say 'I love you'
I say 'me too'
We don't think much about it
It's just a thing that we do
We go out walking
We don't talk much
