Although the appearance of Astrud Gilberto in the recording studio turned out to be possible only thanks to her husband Joao Gilberto, one of the most famous Brazilian artists of the 20th century, her uniquely vibrant, frankly naive tone not only provided her with a strong position in the charts, but also inspired many imitators throughout the world.
Astrud Gilberto had no professional musical experience in any form until, in 1963, he and Joao Gilberto took part in Stan Getz studio session in New York. By that time, Goetz had already recorded several albums inspired by Brazilian rhythms, and Verve label brought him together to work on another album with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto - cream of Brazilian music. In order to achieve a strong crossover effect, the producer needed English-language Brazilian vocals. And after Joao Gilberto recorded his and Jobima song The Girl from Ipanema in Portuguese, her English version was recorded by Astrud Gilberto. Just at that time in the studio there was not a single Brazilian with English. Even before the release of the album Getz and Astrud Gilberto became famous. In mid-1964, the song ranked fifth in the US charts. The album turned out to be the best-selling jazz album by that time, Astrud Gilberto became the all-American star.
Her first album was released in May 1965. Although he did not hit the Top 40 hit parade, the proposed assembly of Brazilian classical standards and ballads turned out to be extremely contagious light music. And despite the fact that Astrud Gilberto never returned to the American Gyp Charts, Verve’s participation in her further creative development resulted in organizing a tandem with Gil Evans (Look to the Rainbow, 1966), and later with a Brazilian organist and arranger Walter Wonderley (A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness, 1967).
Astrud Gilberto remained a major Brazilian pop star in the 60s and 70s, but in the United States, after Astrud Gilberto’s latest album, Verve, was released in 1969, it was gradually forgotten.
