Любой маг мог попытаться пройти Тест и войти в Конклав. Тест является смертельно опасным испытанием, требующим великолепного владения магией. Войдя в Конклав, маг с одной стороны получал поддержку других магов в ситуациях, одобренных Советом. В том числе он имел возможность обмениваться информацией с другими магами, получал доступ к некоторым «неопубликованным» знаниям. В то же время он брал на себя обязанности соблюдать Устав Конклава.
В 3-ем тысячелетии Старой Эры во главе Совета стал Великий Маг Скракан. Именно при нём в Конклав были приняты Тенсес и Незеб, его лучшие ученики. Однако в результате возникших между ними разногласий от государства людей, Кании, отделилась южная часть страны, и во главе вновь образованного государства, Хадагана, встал Незеб. Совет тоже оказался расколот. Но через 500 лет после первой войны Кании и Хадагана Скракану удалось восстановить целостность Конклава. Незеб и Тенсес вернулись в Совет и были вынуждены терпеть друг друга.
После Катаклизма Конклав магов должен работать как никогда много и дружно - необходимо спасать мир. Около 100 лет Совет ещё функционирует, претворяя в жизнь эту задачу, но противоречия (главным образом между Тенсесом и Незебом) вновь дают о себе знать. Совет раскалывается на две части - канийскую во главе с Тенсесом и хадаганскую во главе с Незебом. Скракан пытается вернуть Совету целостность, но тщетно. В 356 году Конклав практически прекращает существование, Великие маги Хадагана и Кании общаются только со своими единомышленниками под надзором глав двух национальных конклавов - Незеба и Тенсеса.
Есть ещё несколько Великих магов, не принадлежащих ни к одной из национальных фракций, но они или мало интересуются делами мира (Тка-Рик на Гипате), или не видят возможности для возвращения Конклаву целостности (Скракан). Конклав Великих магов, просуществовав 2 тысячи лет, распался.
Одним из самых авторитетных источников, рассказывающим о сути Конклава и самих Великих магов, являются «Воспоминания Просперо» - монография одного из основателей Конклава, погибшего во время Катаклизма. Вот любопытная цитата из этой книги:
«...Одной из самых интереснейших тем для молодых магов, только приступивших к постижению магической науки, всегда был, есть и остаётся Тест – испытание на звание Великого. Это нормально, и я бы никогда не взялся за обучение юнца, если бы он проявил безразличие к этому таинству. Гораздо хуже, если по окончании обучения этот интерес сохраняется, и адепт так и не может понять – в чём суть Теста. Такой маг никогда не сможет стать Великим, и если неуемное любопытство всё же заставит его бросить Конклаву вызов, я заранее вызываю похоронную команду. Впрочем, чаще всего и хоронить-то уже нечего, достаточно развеять по ветру прах очередного глупца и неудачника...» The Conclave of Great Magicians was formed several millennia ago, after the death of the Jun civilization. By entering the Conclave, the mage on the one hand received the support of other mages in situations approved by the Council. Including he had the opportunity to exchange information with other magicians, gained access to some "unpublished" knowledge. At the same time, he took it upon himself to uphold the Rite of the Conclave.
In the 3rd millennium of the Old Era, the Great Mage Skrakan became the head of the Council. It was under him that Tenses and Nezeb, his best students, were admitted to the Conclave. However, as a result of the disagreements that arose between them, the southern part of the country separated from the state of people, Kania, and Nezeb stood at the head of the newly formed state, Khadagan. The council was also split. But 500 years after the first war between Cania and Hadagan, Skrakan managed to restore the integrity of the Conclave. Nezeb and Tensess returned to the Council and were forced to endure each other.
After the Cataclysm, the Conclave of Mages must work harder and harder than ever before - saving the world. For about 100 years, the Council has still been functioning, implementing this task, but the contradictions (mainly between Tenses and Nezeb) are again making themselves felt. The council is split into two parts - the Kanian one led by Tenses and the Khadagan one led by Nezeb. Skrakan tries to restore integrity to the Council, but in vain. In 356, the Conclave practically ceases to exist, the Great Magicians of Khadagan and Kania communicate only with their like-minded people under the supervision of the heads of two national conclaves - Nezeb and Tenses.
There are several other Great Magicians who do not belong to any of the national factions, but they either have little interest in the affairs of the world (Tka-Rik on Gipat), or do not see the possibility of returning integrity to the Conclave (Skrakan). The Conclave of Great Magicians, having existed for 2 thousand years, disintegrated.
One of the most authoritative sources telling about the essence of the Conclave and the Great Magicians themselves is "Memories of Prospero" - a monograph by one of the founders of the Conclave, who died during the Cataclysm. Here's an interesting quote from this book:
“... One of the most interesting topics for young magicians who have just begun to comprehend magical science has always been, is and remains the Test - a test for the title of the Great One. This is normal, and I would never take up teaching a young man if he showed indifference to this sacrament. It is much worse if at the end of the training this interest persists and the adept still cannot understand what the essence of the Test is. Such a magician can never become a Great One, and if irrepressible curiosity still compels him to challenge the Conclave, I will call the funeral team in advance. However, more often than not there is nothing to bury, it is enough to scatter the ashes of another fool and loser in the wind ... "
